AI coding tools made it dramatically faster to write code. But writing code was rarely the bottleneck. The hard part is everything around it: making sense of feedback from users, negotiating tickets and priorities, and closing the loop when things ship.
Modem is an AI-native product management platform. We connect to where your users already talk – Slack, Discord, GitHub, Linear, email – and automatically categorize, prioritize, and surface the product signals buried in those conversations. Then we help teams act on them: creating context-rich tickets, delegating tasks, notifying users when their requests ship.
We raised $4.4M from Accel and Inovia Capital, with angels from Sentry, Cohere, Vercel, and Framer. The team is small – you'd work directly with the founders.
Who we're looking for
As a Growth Engineer, you own the infrastructure behind product-led growth, and you hold yourself to a high bar. You want to ship work you're proud of, not just work that moves a metric.
You've built growth systems before: funnels, activation flows, and retention loops.
You're comfortable across the full stack and with billing systems, usage metering, and self-serve monetization.
You think in conversion rates and cohort curves, but you're an engineer first. You'd rather build the system than manage a spreadsheet.
You're comfortable using AI to automate lifecycle workflows: onboarding sequences, churn prediction, personalized re-engagement.
What the work looks like
This is a full-stack engineering role, but pointed at growth. You'll own the systems that turn signups into paying teams: onboarding, activation, self-serve upgrades, retention. You write code daily across Next.js, Cloudflare Workers, and Postgres.
In a given week you might be:
Building and optimizing onboarding and self-serve upgrade flows that convert free users into paying teams
Designing AI-powered lifecycle systems: automated nudges, personalized outreach, usage-based triggers that drive retention and expansion
Instrumenting the product to understand user behavior end-to-end, from first integration install through expansion signals
Building internal dashboards that give the team real-time visibility into funnels, cohort retention, and revenue
Shipping pricing and trial experiments fast, and using data to decide what stays
You'd define the growth playbook, not just execute one. We don't have a growth team yet – you'd be building it from the ground up.
Mostly: you want to be early at a company where you define how the product grows, not just optimize what someone else designed.
